Confronting Suicide in Construction

Hard Hat Courage is the construction industry's collective commitment to save lives by making it safe to talk about our mental health—every day, on every jobsite.

Our mission is clear: to save lives across the construction industry by prioritizing our colleagues' mental health just as much as their physical safety. Together, we’re equipping construction craft & industry professionals and their companies with the tools to take care of themselves and support each other—because every life matters, and every conversation counts.

Protecting Mind Safety on the Job

The construction industry has one of the highest suicide rates in the U.S. compared to other industries. Addressing risk factors unique to construction through evidence-informed suicide prevention programs and practices can save lives and improve the overall well-being of the workforce.

Tools for the Jobsite, Tools for Life

Through Hard Hat Courage, the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention has created free tools made for and designed with our partners in the construction industry to prevent suicide and help workplaces navigate loss. From toolbox talks to training for company and crew leaders—and critical support for after a suicide—there’s something everyone in the construction industry can use both on and off the jobsite.

Make mental health a priority. Check out our resources—available in both English and Spanish—to get started.

Our Partners

Hard Hat Courage is a cross-industry initiative led by AFSP in partnership with construction industry leaders to confront and ultimately, reverse the high rates of suicide in the profession. Together, we can end suicide in construction.

Partner organizations commit to protecting the mental health of their colleagues, having open conversations, and conducting training with AFSP to create a network of trainers in their own organization who can provide AFSP’s evidence-informed education on mental health and suicide prevention to their workforce.
